Packaging includes the activities of designing and producing the container for a product. The container is called the package, and it might include up to three levels of material.
Primary packaging refers to the container which is in direct contact with product whereas secondary packaging refers to the container which holds the primary package.
There is possibility of the tertiary packaging also. A fixed quantity of the secondary package may be placed in an outer package, which is termed as tertiary package.
Let’s discuss with an example:
- 1x10x10 Tablet Packaging : 1 Strip of the tablet (containing 10 tablet) is having a carton which is known as monocarton. 10 Monocarton (i.e. 10 strips) packed in a outer box, known as outer carton. 10 outer carton is packed in an shipper, which is known as tertiary package.
- 10×10 Tablet Packaging : 10 strips of tablet packed in outer carton. Here each strip do not have any carton (no monocarton).
